MI2 has been monitoring and tracking the daily intellectual State of the World since 1 March 2001. The State of the World is defined in terms of 17 Thought Variables (called Topics or Indices). The variables are organized around 7 groups and are color coded:
The Macroknow Library includes a knowledge map for each variable or Topic. The knowledge maps hold the intellect that the variable represents. The intellect is derived from the works of philosophers, economists, social critics, prophets, sages, psychoanalysts, historians, and scientists representing a broad range of political, economic, and philosophical viewpoints Except for Religion, all the data sets start at 1 March 2001. The data set for Religion starts at 8 August 2001. All 17 variables are measured daily (Pacific Time is used). Each variable is expressed in 3 forms: scalar, percent or mindshare, and percent rank or mindrank.
Besides the 1-day measurements, MI2 also provides 7-day and 30-day cumulative measurements for each Topic, and the associated mindshares and mindranks. These provide rolling “weekly” and “monthly” perspectives, respectively. CONSUMER AWARENESS AND ATTENTION TOP A Topic's mindshare measures the awareness consumers allot to the Topic. For example, the mindshare allotted to Evil was extremely high in the few months before and the few months after 11 September 2001. It was high before 9/11 because people were concerned about the downside of globalization. It was high after because people were horrified by the 9/11 terrorist attack. A Topic's mindrank measures the attention consumers focus on the Topic. The higher the mindshare is, the higher the corresponding mindrank. However, a Topic that has a relatively low mindshare over long stretches of time can have a very high mindrank. This occurs when people's attention becomes highly focused on that Topic. For example, the mindrank for Law before 9/11 was ironically higher than the mindrank for Evil after 9/11 indicating that people's concerns with the perceived inequities in the law was extremely high. The idea of a "stream of thought" was first developed by the American physiologist, psychologist and philosopher William James. This idea is rooted in Heracltus' observation that you can never step in the same river twice. People sense and think about what is going on within and without themselves. The dynamic flow of the personal sensations and thoughts is the personal stream of thought. The superposition of all the personal streams of thought constitute the World's stream of thought. The World's stream of thought is affected by and affects world events. MI2 measures and tracks two aspects of the World's stream of thought: The awareness stream and the attention stream. When the streams are correlated with world events, you can see causal chains that would otherwise remain hidden. The stream of thought in MI2 is a most powerful instrument:
MI2 provides the correlations between all 17 variables in Matrix form. There are 289 (17x17) daily correlations, 289 7-day correlations, and 289 30-day correlations. All the correlations are calculated and charted daily.
BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY AND THREAT WARNINGS TOP MI2 uses mindranks in conjunction with two devices -- the "Cause-and-Effect" Matrix and the Worldview Matrix -- to generate daily business opportunity and threat warnings. The warnings are automatically determined, categorized and ranked. The Worldview encodes high moral and ethical standards consistent with free will.
